Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana has sold close to three lakh tickets in India with a week still to go before it reaches cinemas on 5 November.

Gross advance bookings in India crossed ₹15 crore on Thursday, including blocked seats, according to figures from the tracker Sacnilk reported by The Indian Express and NDTV. Excluding blocked seats, sales stood at about ₹13 crore. The numbers rose through the day, and The Week put the gross figure at ₹15.89 crore by the afternoon.

The Hindi version is doing most of the work. It accounts for about 84% of Indian sales, The Indian Express reported, with the Kannada version at about ₹2 crore and Telugu under ₹50 lakh. Delhi NCR is the biggest city market, followed by Bengaluru and Mumbai.

Overseas

Outside India, pre-sales stand at about $2.58 million, or roughly ₹24.5 crore, Mint and Moneycontrol reported. North America accounts for $1.91 million of that, followed by the UK and Ireland at $268,800 and Australia and New Zealand at $248,300.

The comparison the trade is watching is Ranbir Kapoor’s own Animal, which made $13.19 million overseas in its 2023 opening weekend. Pre-sales a week out and weekend takings are not like-for-like, but the gap shows how much walk-in business Ramayana will need abroad.

The film

Ranbir Kapoor plays Rama, Sai Pallavi plays Sita and Yash plays Raavana. The film had a premiere in Los Angeles on 28 October. Early reactions praised its visual effects and scale, while some reviewers raised concerns about the English dubbing, The Indian Express reported.
